Fostering a sense of belonging and identity through sound and spirituality
Music, an important part of the social and cultural tapestry of Australia, has the power to influence and shape people's identity and their sense of belonging. The notion of belonging and having an identity is broad; it has its roots in ideas, beliefs, and practices that underscore social organizations encompassing a range of understandings. This chapter situates itself within my wider ongoing study on 'Spirituality and Wellbeing: Music in the communityThe findings of this study are set within a particular Christian setting. Therefore, no generalizations to other musicians or community settings are made. However, the findings do show that music in community settings can positively engender wellbeing, and can enliven, enrich and transform people's sense of belonging where spiritual connections can be made between God and man.
