This collection of essays analyses the diversity of Asian capitalism and focuses on one of the region's emerging economic superpowers, India. This chapter explains how the varieties of capitalism (VoC) approach can be applied to India, and how India can offer insights into the study of capitalism in Asia more broadly. In doing so, we are mindful of India's specific characteristics, including its attainment of democracy prior to economic development. We seek to ascertain how far, if it all, India falls from the 'regional norm' in terms of the evolution of capitalism in Asia, in relation to the ideas behind economic policymaking, modes of collaboration between states and firms, and the effectiveness of development strategies.
