Research statement

Background This practice-based research project involved the development of a brandmark for the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust (KPST), a newly formed entity established to manage the Kardinia Park Stadium facility. Kelly and Kennedy were the creative Directors and chief researchers of the project. Over the course of the project a team of five design students created conceptual design strategies across a range of collateral from which the KPST chose to implement one creative solution. The brand mark needed to respond to the brief of repositioning the Kardinia Park Stadium as an inclusive, community focused centre for both sport and cultural activities. Contribution This research followed a participatory design methodology, working with community members, Wadawurrung Community of Geelong, the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust KPST and the City of Geelong to investigate identity and inclusiveness through design and in design outcomes. The project ran for seven months, was supported by industry mentor Mr. Richard Henderson from R-Co Design. Significance The outcome of the research highlighted the challenges of addressing community expectations with a progressive, visionary design noting a non-Indigenous design solution was the chosen design. This research was used to interrogate the Australian Indigenous Design Charter in practice, and informed the development of the International Indigenous Design Charter. The final design has been implemented. Results of this research have been used in journal articles and one conference paper as a research example of working with the Charter documents. https://www.kardiniapark.vic.gov.au/about-the-trust/). Results of this research have been used in journal articles and one conference paper as a research example of working with the Charter documents.
