Notes

Performing the Installation is a live performance work, performed within a sculptural installation within the exhibition 'Subliminal' curated by David Komary. The work invited local artist, performers and dancers to contribute to the live component of the work, which was documented and displayed in a public facing window.

Research statement

Bkground: This body of work was developed during my tenure at peer-reviewed residency AIR Niederösterreich, Krems, Austria. I was selected to develop a body of work based on the role of performance practice within a visual arts context and conduct research into the history of Viennese Actionism and the role video documentation plays in archiving and presenting live art. Based on this research I was curated into an exhibition at Ig Bildende Kunst by Director of Galerie Stadtpark David Komary. The presentation of this research was funded by an Australia Council grant. Contribution: I produced a sculptural-installation that I performed within daily over a 4-week period. I invited local multi-disciplinary artists to contribute improvised and devised material within the installation. These live unadvertised performances were held daily within the opening hours of the exhibition. They were also filmed and exhibited in a street-facing window; an accumulative video work capturing the iterations of the work and negating the perception of a static artwork. The work considered the role of live performance interventions within the context of an art gallery–with particular attention paid to the way audiences encounter live art. Significance: The work brought together a diverse range of artists including poets, film-makers, visual artists and dancers, and established a new international community of practice based on a shared research interests in the role of live performance within a visual arts context. The work considered new methodologies for practicing live art, including the documentation and exhibition of footage that captured the unadvertised performance program. The work contributes to the field of practice engaged with audience encounters and live artwork in the museum/gallery context. This body of work has led to my participation in the ARC funded research group- Precarious Movement, looking at contemporary issues around live art within the gallery/museum.
