A hierarchical structured carbon nanosphere with a mesoporous yolk and a microporous shell is applied for Li–S batteries. The yolk hosts a high content of sulfur and the core blocks the soluble polysulfide from migrating outside. This unique structure has rendered a high capacity, good rate performance, as well as a very stable cyclability for Li-S batteries.
