Christian-based youth ministry in many Western countries is being conducted in difficult circumstances. How might denominations, parishes, and youth workers best approach youth ministry? Theologian Arthur Canales (2006) proposes eight different models of youth ministry. Drawing on Canales' typology, this article considers youth ministry among the major denominations in the city of Melbourne, Australia. The authors examine the various ministry activities, pastoral approaches, and theological underpinnings among various denominations and match these with the models described by Canales. The authors describe why these styles are favored, and consider what makes a model effective in assisting the spiritual development of youth.
