'The Walking Library for Wild Ways’ is a socially engaged, relational performance and walking art project that explores shared walking practices can be facilitated digitally as geographically remote, synchronous and collaborative place-based making strategies for sharing global and local knowledge and ways of imagining futures of fragile cultural and environmental ecologies. It was commissioned by The Museum of Loss and Renewal as part of the ongoing Place, People and Time residency series. The Walking Library is an ongoing project created by Misha Myers and Deirdre Heddon with a series of editions first conceived and initiated in 2012 to co-create knowledge about local environments through sharing walks and readings with the public from collections of books, each aesthetically composed and curated for a specific context in partnership with local commissioning organisations in global contexts.Research statement
As part of a wider investigation of walking as cultural practice, ‘The Walking Library for Wild Ways’ is a performance walk work created to explore forms of digital facilitation of shared walking practices as geographically remote, synchronous and collaborative place-based making strategies for sharing global and local knowledge and ways of imagining futures of fragile cultural and environmental ecologies. The performance walks were created by Misha Myers and Deirdre Heddon for the ‘Place, People and Time: Wild Ways’ residency, an online event devised in partnership with The Museum of Loss and Renewal (Tracy Mackenna & Edwin Janssen, Italy) as part of the latter’s ongoing residency series, devised in partnership with artists of international repute. The two long-standing artist duos/projects shared their site-specific, participatory and socially engaged art practices through four weekly 3-hour online sessions across October 2021 to facilitate conversations and generation of new place-based strategies for intercultural and global collaboration with sixteen practitioners, selected via a competitive application process, working in place-based practices across diverse disciplines. The first of the ‘Wild Ways’ performance walks took the form of a recorded audio walk including location-based performed readings by Myers, Heddon and McKenna, and the second, the facilitation of participatory shared, remote and synchronous walks between pairs of residents using locative media, shared readings and time-based scores in lost, renewed or fragile places documented in a collaborative multimedia map with strategies for counter-mapping the colonial practices of mapping space. The digital version of ‘The Walking Library’ builds upon Myers’ body of work recognised as an example of first generation locative media art (Leonardo Electronic Almanac, Vol 13, No 3, 2006). ‘The Walking Library’ was featured in the BBC Radio Scotland program ‘Scotland Outdoors’ (24 November 2021).Publication classification
